Sankaranthi / Pongal / lohri Festival is around the corner. This year it is falling on 15th jan. We(my child and I) are planning to make Mango Toran . you can call it Mango Toran or Maa Toran or Festive Mango Toran or Festive Maa Toran. We tie Mango Toran Not only for Sankaranthi , For almost every Festivals in India we tie this Mango Toran at the main entrance of the house. So here I involved my 4 year old child to make Mango Toran for this festival. Involving children in preparation of festival whether in food or decorating, so this will be fruitful for the children. This kind of celebrations are commonly practised in waldorf school and in waldorf families.
We went to the backyard of our house to collect Mango leaves.
This Mango tree is of his height, so he enjoyed plucking Mango leaves on his own
He collected Mango leaves in to the basket and then hanged the basket in the Mango tree
He also climbed up on the Mango tree. Climbing up on the tree is a great gross motor skill activity.
He enjoyed touching and smelling the leaves and it’s a great sensorial activity.
He collected Mango leaves in the basket and started taking out the Mango leaves from the branches
Then we needed punching machine and yarn for making Toran
He did punching the Mango leaves for lacing. It’s a great fine motor skill development
For younger kids, they may find difficult while punching the Mango leaves, adult can offer help in that case by holding the leaves
He is now lacing this Mango leaves one by one
It enhances their hand and eye coordination and improves concentration
Finally he is done with Mango Toran
I tied this Mango Toran at the entrance of the house
Do share with me how you involved your child during this Festival.
Happy parenting
